Hi, everyone! This is Brent Watkinson from the KCMO Pod sharing some student work with you from all points and career paths of TAD. Beginning November 7, 2011, we will be giving you glimpses of TAD classes. You can sit in on some short classes and see how effective TAD classes really are!

This "try-it-before-you-buy-it" event is called "Explore TAD."

Explore TAD will take place Monday, Nov. 7, through Friday, Nov. 11 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm CST. Participants will be able to attend each class "live" in our interactive, streaming classrooms. Actual TAD students can either watch all classes live in real time or watch recorded versions of each class on-demand at any time! Registration is $75 per applicant, and is open to participants both domestic and international.

During the summers of the past several years, The Illustration Academy has brought together some of America's most accomplished and best-known illustrators to share their insights and advice with students. The students range in age from eighteen to sixty years old and have come from not only the United States, but as far away as Hong Kong, England, Belgium, Sweden, Brazil, and Argentina.

Unique to the illustration field is the fact that a graduating student is thrust into the market place and forced to compete with established illustrators. The mission of the Academy is to shorten the gap that exists between the student and the working professional. This problem is resolved using a rigorous hands-on approach implemented by the faculty. The students work through each assignment with a logical step-by-step approach to produce finished illustrations. Driven by real-world examples and deadlines, the students are encouraged to focus on concepts, techniques, and to pursue a personal point of view to make their work unique. Along side the technical demonstrations of media and life drawing skills, the Academy focuses on the functional business practices in the field of illustration. These include self-promotion, advertising, contracts, taxes and accounting.

Hey Everyone,

This past Friday night, I had my Erotic Drawings Show in the crossroads here in Kansas City. Really interesting responses from all sorts of people, not to much animosity- viewers were more curious than anything. Unfortunately the show received one to many complaints to take it down, so I had to take it down the following day. A 26 hour erotic art show, not bad Kansas City. I thought it would get canned sooner. I met some serious collectors and buyers that put a couple of bids down for the work, I am still hesitant one whether or not I want to part with a certain select few. I'm going to have a follow up viewing of the work at my loft in the crossroads this coming friday for everyone that couldn't make it to the show. But all in all my goal has been fulfilled, I set out to complete a body of work and exhibit it in Kansas City. This is not the end of this work either, I'm going to continue these drawings in my spare time and try to publish the drawings in a big coffee table book that also tells the story about the drawings.

Hello Everyone!

The Kansas City TAD Studio was mighty busy on Mardi Gras!

First we started the night off meeting up with a bunch of Kansas City folk at YJ's Snack Bar, a little bohemian cafe a block away from Trey's loft in the Crossroads District. The idea every year is that random people all congregate with wild costumes to form a huge parade, each neighborhood with their own faction. Calling themselves names such as "The Lady Mermaids," and " Crazy Unicorns," these guys and gals caused a ruckus on the way to the historic 18th and Vine jazz district. Once the parade finally reached it's destination a mile away, it felt like a bomb went off, the energy was amazing. We slipped inside The Blue Room to here some pumpin' jazz- what a night!

Jazz Night at The Phoenix

Hello Everyone,

Last Thursday night the studio and Brent Watkinson, TAD KCMO instructor, went to The Phoenix Jazz Club to hear the wonderful sounds of Brent's good friend Dan Bliss and teacher Rod Fleeman. As they were ripping it up on the guitars blending blues and jazz melodies, we were drawing away talking about design and picture making. Dan was discussing with us about the about how art and music go hand and hand. They're sort of like cousins in a way, they clash together once and while. Thanks Brent and Dan for such a great night.

Hey Everyone,

I thought I would post these recent figure drawings and talk about them a little while they're still fresh off the easel. What I look for in a drawing is the whole composition of the page, not just a floating figure with decent modeling in the lights. The composition has always been more important to me than nit-picky-perfect drawing. Looking for "the whole picture," in all the work I do helps me translate a more cohesive aesthetic that defines me. No one is ever going to see the model but that does'nt give you an excuse to draw bad or like Matisse because its artsy-fartsy, just draw the best you can in the time you are given.

These figures are composed with mainly three values- (1) white of the paper- (2) a mid-tone "light charcoal stroke"- (3) then a violent, heavy smash of black charcoal. I always try to simplify just enough in the values so that I can get where I'm going- faster. It leaves time for creating the picture as a whole- giving the final product more impact.

Hey Everyone,

I just got back to Kansas City from Paris France this past sunday night. I want to thank Andy Brinkman and Jane Radstrom for holding down the fort. I love traveling- it's always been a good way to clear my head and think about things at home and my career, in Paris, it was no different. what an amazing place with beautiful people and architecture. The French language is a lot like dancing, you have to commit to speaking it or else your just going to look like a fool, haha.

My brother Beau, 20 years of age, has been studying in France for 2 months now, 4 weeks in Torre, a couple weeks now in Paris. Its amazing to me that he speaks fluent French and he's only been studying the French language for three semesters! Incredible! We had such a good time going to cafes and wondering down narrow alley ways at all times of the night, we even rented bicycles several times to get around Paris. We met some great people you showed us a heck of a time as well. I tried my best to sketch all the time while I was there - here are some of those sketches.

Dr. Sketchy's in Kansas City

Sure, you can spend your time in a life-drawing class rendering the gross anatomy of aging hippies who earn extra money by posing naked for art students. Or you can attend Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School at the Loft in the West Bottoms from 6 to 10 p.m. first and third Sundays. A combination of drawing class, cabaret and burlesque where the focus is on gorgeous models, awesome music and social lubrication. Art monkeys: bring your sketch pads, pencils, pens, paints or whatever artsy medium lifts your luggage. Non-artists: You’re free to attend just for the entertainment. The cover is $6 at the door, way less than the Junior College will charge you to draw somebody’s grandmother.

Due to the nature of warehouse loft living we do in fact celebrate a summer vacation. Dr. Sketchy Anti Art school KCMO is in session Sept. thru June.

TAD @ Kansas City's First Friday! 11-5-10

Hello everyone!

Here are a couple of videos we shot out at first fridays- the place was packed and we meet a lot of potential students! Thanks to Todd Christiansen for the video projection, and Brent Watkinson for plowing the streets with TAD promo and getting people excited about our community! it was pretty cold towards the end of the night so hats off to our model/ fire hola-hoop dare devil, Ms. Natalie Mcfancy Pants!!!!!! And last but not least- THANK YOU KCMO TAD STUDENTS! You guys were a huge help to TAD and I could not have done this without all of your hard work and dedication- you guys rock!

Last weekend, the KC,MO TAD POD, went up to Iowa to see the internationally renowned illustrator Gary Kelley, did I mention that he's the most awarded illustrator at the society of illustrators in New York! What a kind soul, so generous and humble! At his studio we had so many conversations about art, painting and living, we also checked more new pieces for his Muses and WWI graphic novel projects.

Prepping Mark's NY Show

The KCMO Pod crew spent the afternoon with Mark English yesterday helping prepare his paintings for their trip to New York. Trey and Jane will be delivering the paintings themselves, so the work didn't need to be as bundled up as it would if it was being shipped. It was pretty awesome and incredibly valuable to see how Mark mounts and packs his paintings. His system is simple and elegant.

In between bubble wrapping and framing, we took a few breaks to dig through the past work Mark keeps in his studio. I found the ice-skating illustration tucked in there! I snapped some photos of the pile of paper scraps left over from Mark's current collage approach and the wall in his matte-area that features George Pratt, Sterling Hundley, and our own Trey Bryan, among others.

It was a fun day hanging out and to cap it all off the always-generous Mark took us out for lunch!

Today was such a beautiful day! Perfect weather here in Kansas City- the nicest it's felt in a while. Today, I also finished my 300 page sketchbook that I have been tackling off and on throughout the year, and between filling up others. I will miss her but she was a lot of trouble and I'm glad to set her free. I uploaded some figure drawings from today's sessions to give more people an idea into the way I think.

Sketching out at the Filling Station today, I felt I should take some photos to remember the great weather, Also I posted a sketch of Andy Brinkman, TAD Student. I was really trying to achieve a highly photographic quality with this drawing, including a great likeness. I have found that cast drawing is a great way to get "in to," the hands and turn form with designed economy of mark making.

Yesterday there was and ultra cool lowrider showdown a block away from the TAD POD. We figured, "OKAY" and strolled on over there to draw some bling!

Last Friday the KC POD had one hell of a time!

Trey Bryan, Jane Radstrom & Andy Brinkman teamed up with Kansas City's hottest DJ, SHEPPA to throw a little art party on the streets. The crowds were amazing, the model (Natalie McFancy - hooper/fire dancer) was amazing, and good times were had by all. We stuck to 2 minute poses for the duration. Most of our photos are from the daytime, but after dark things really got good - check out the videos.

Jane and I were extras in a local music video! We were about a block away from the pod, then we saw all this mayhem and thought, "ok?!" We met up with some cool cats like DJ Nomathematics, and N8 Studio!

Today, Mark English met up with TAD for lunch and then invited all of us to the studio to check out his new work. It was amazing! Mark is a machine! When ask what inspired him to pump out all these new paintings he responded, "because the process interested me so much!" Mark has been using collage with his oil paintings. He showed us new finished paintings, as well as small studies intended for larger works- and talked about the challenge of scaling up while maintain his sense of texture and mark-making.

We had a great night here drawing at the POD! A big thanks goes out to the model for her excellent poses and attitude. Everyone here pumped out some great, informative drawings with personal intent, you all should be proud! Here are some selections from the last drawing session, a lot to think about as far as technique and thinking of simplicity- a lot of great things going on!

Please join us Mondays 6 to 9pm and Thursdays 7 to 10pm for 3 hours of nude gesture drawing.

The Art Department is proud to introduce Kansas City figure drawing down at the TAD POD! Monday nights 6:oo to 9:oopm and Thursdays 7 to 10pm. This session focuses on gestures and short poses. Most sessions will feature a nude model or occasionally costumed. The POD is located in the romantic West Bottoms in the Hobbs building. Easels and drawing horses are available, So bring your pad or you sketchbook and join us for a fun night of figure drawing. Make sure you text or call upon your arrive, as you need a key code to access the building, thank you.

The First Day

Here's a look at what the first day of TAD looked like through my filter. First, some Thöny studies done in graphite, colored pencil and ink; then some sketches from the various meals of the day.

The first day of TAD was pretty overwhelming in the best way. About half way through the day it dawned on me that this is the real deal, that I have a lot of hard work ahead of me and that the rabbit hole goes much deeper than I could have ever guessed. I couldn't be more excited!

Jane and I recently performed live figure drawing at the Hemingway Building in the KC's vibrant Crossroads district. TAD and The Illustration Academy were also present, it was a huge turn out. Jason Manley, CA.ORG and TAD, stopped by as well to help out with the success of the show. A Thanks goes out to everyone for taking such great photos of the event, much appreciated!
